The Almeria region is becoming increasingly popular with golfers due to the fine dry weather, long hours of sunlight and uncrowded courses.There are several first class courses in the region, with four being not more than a hours drive from Berja.
ALMERIMAR GOLF is the nearest course, located in the growing resort of Almerimar. It was opened in 1976 and was designed by Gary Player, having wide tree lined fairways and fast large greens. The course is well known for it's twelfth hole, with the green being situated within a lake.
PLAYA SERENA GOLF is located south of Roquetas de Mar, a short drive from Berja. A more compact course than Almerimar, but it's tougher greens, plus having the character of a true links course, mean it is a good challenge. During the last couple of years the facilities have been updated as well.
LA ENVIA GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB is north of Roquetas de Mar, near Vicar. It provides a complete change as this course is in the mountains and has a desert ambience to the location. The course has spectacular views and challenging elevations. Buggys are recommended.
ALBORAN GOLF is located just to the west of Almeria airport in Retamar. The newest first class course in the region, a stones throw from the beach and next to the Cabo de Gata natural park. The Par 72 course is know for being a challenge, having 66 bunkers throughout.
The other first class courses in the region involve longer journey times but MARINA GOLF, VALLE DEL ESTE, and THE INDIANA COURSE at DESERT SPRINGS are all located near the A7 motorway, with the furthest being just short of two hours away.
